Abstract

1379405 Photo-electric instruments IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Sept 1972 [30 Sept 1971] 45474/71 Heading G1A A combined reflectance colorimeter and fluorimeter comprises two miniature fluorescent tubes as light and U.V. sources and a filter wheel in front of a photo-cell the output of which is compared with that of other photo-cells directly viewing small areas of the fluorescent tubes. As shown, Fig.2, the device utilizes a colour matching or artificial daylight fluorescent tube Tl and a U.V. fluorescent tube T2 surround by a cylinder of "black" glass which transmits U.V. radiation. Radiation reflected from or produced by fluorescence in the sample S is incident on a Se photo-cell P1 via a filter wheel W. Two reference photo-cells P2, P3 directly receive radiation emitted by the tubes Tl and T2 respectively. The reference photo-cells are connected in parallel to a potentiometer (H) arranged in a current balancing circuit with the cell P1, an electronic galvanometer (G) providing an out of balance indication which is nulled by adjustment of the potentiometer (H) which is suitably calibrated. Trimmer resistors (T4 to T7) are provided which are selectively switched into the circuit to compensate for differences in the transmissivity of the filters. The filter wheel may contain X, Y and Z tristimulus filters together with a U.V. transmissive filter. An enlarged filter wheel may contain in addition to the tristimulus filters nine spectral filters of selected wavelengths.
