Abstract
1379268 #-Alanine TOKYO FINE CHEMICAL CO Ltd 6 June 1972 26407/72 Heading C2C #-Alanine is produced by reacting acrylic acid or an acrylic ester with aqueous ammonia in the presence of CO 3 <SP>11</SP>; 3,3<SP>1</SP>-imino diproprionic acid may also be added, the amount of CO 3 <SP>11</SP> used being 0À5-1À5 molar equivalents CO 3 <SP>11</SP> per mole of all the acids and esters present. CO 3 <SP>11</SP> may be added as gaseous CO 2 , (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 , NH 4 HCO 3 or NH 4 HCO 3 .NH 2 CO 2 NH 4 . In examples, acrylic acid, methyl acrylate, and ethyl acrylate were used. The process may be operated at 100-200 C. batchwise or continuously. The product mixture may be decolorized with charcoal, heated to distil off NH 3 &c., and the #-alanine crystallized from methanol.
