Abstract

1379253 Retreading tyres KENTREDDER Ltd 20 Oct 1972 [20 July 1971] 34080/71 Heading B7C A worn tyre 2 is retreaded by (a) preparing, e.g. buffing or trueing, its ground engaging surface, (b) securing a prevulcanized tread band or strip 6 on the prepared surface by means of a bonding material layer 7, and (c) compressing the thus formed tyre tread region by inflating the annular air bags 3; of an apparatus which includes the bags and support rings 1, 8. The air bag 9 and its support ring 8 which comprises a plurality of segments hingedly interconnected so as to be collapsible may be placed inside the worn tyre prior to preparing the surface or after the tread band has been applied to the tyre. The other bag is, after application of the tread band placed around the tyre and the outer ring 1 which may be cylindrical (as shown) or frustoconical (Fig. 2, not shown) is placed in position. The bags are then inflated preferably through a common air line 10. When inflated to the required pressure, the bonding material is vulcanized by heat. The outer air bag 3 is axially wider than the tread band so that it applies pressure, when inflated, to the shoulder regions of the tyre.
