Abstract
1379158 Laminated surgical dressing WALLACE CAMERON & CO Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [22 April 1972] 18782/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division A5] A surgical dressing comprises a pad 5 having a water-soluble alginic material 6 secured thereto by attachment means 7 between the alginic material 6 and the pad 5. An adhesive surgical plaster 1 has an adhesive carrier strip 2, a dressing 3 adhered to the strip 2 and a pair of overlapping flaps 4 which cover the dressing 3. The pad 5 is made of surgical lint or may be of non-woven or knitted fabric or elastomeric material and has a substantially coextensive haemostatic gauze of sodium alginate 6 and a net 7 (or gauze or perforate sheet) formed of thermoplastic material such as nylon, polypropylene or polyethylene interposed therebetween. Assembled sheets of these three constituents are passed between a pair of rollers heated to a temperature between 200-500‹ F. to melt the thermoplastics material and cause the alginate gauze to adhere to the lint sheet. The sheets are then cut to form strips which are stuck to elasticated adhesive plaster or stitched to sterile bandage muslin and cut into lengths and rolled up and the dressing or bandage is sterilized and packed. Alternatively, the gauze 6 is secured to the pad 5 by stitch bonding using a thread of alginate fibre or by using polyvinyl alcohol as adhesive.
