1379064 Fibre opening rollers PLATT INTERNATIONAL Ltd 26 July 1973 [28 July 1972] 35433/72 Heading D1N A fibre opening roller having two end faces 5, 6 and a cylindrical working face 4 therebetween, is provided with an aperture adjacent the axis of the roller and with a passage 27 extending through the roller, one end of the passage communicating with the aperture, e.g. via chamber 26, and the other end defining an opening in one of the end faces; the arrangement is such that in use, with the roller rotatably mounted in a housing 1 with gaps 11 and 12 defined between the end faces 5 and 6 and the adjacent walls of the housing, rotation of the roller causes an airflow through the passage 27 and out of the opening and into the gap, e.g. 11 between the end face 5 and the adjacent wall of the housing, which airflow counteracts the entry of fibrous material radially inwardly into the gap 11. The passage 27 is preferably one of a plurality of such passages, the openings thereof being equi-spaced adjacent the periphery of the face 5. The aperture may open into the end face 5 and forms the mouth of the chamber 26, the roller being mounted for rotation on a hollow shaft 25 which extends into the mouth of the chamber 26. In a further embodiment, the aperture is formed in the other end face 6, and forms the mouth of the chamber 26, a hole being formed in the housing wall adjacent the face 6 whereby the chamber communicates with atmosphere. A tube may additionally be provided extending into the chamber 26 and passing out through said hole in the housing wall. In an alternative embodiment, one or more further passages are provided opening into the other end face and communicating with the chamber 26 via the passages 27.
