Abstract

1378775 Stranding machines; unwinding tension control HAMANA IRON WORKS CO Ltd 31 Dec 1971 [25 June 1971 19 Oct 1971] 61071/71 Headings D1J and D1T A stranding machine (Fig. - 3) comprises a drive shaft 15 and a plurality of units in series, each consisting of a stationary body 19 (Fig. 1), a cylinder 5 rotatable therein and carrying a gear 7 engaging a gear 17 on the drive shaft, a pair of members 8a, 8b secured to the cylinder 5 and a cradle 3b for a wire supply' bobbin. 1b mounted on a shaft 12 in bearings 13, 14 mounted in the cylinder 5 or member 8b. Each wiretravels along the machine in a wave-like path, passing near the centre of the cylinder 5, and thus enabling the use of small diameter bearings 6a, 6b supporting the cylinder, which may be of. light aluminium alloy, and allowing high rotation speeds. Each cradle being mounted on an individual support and unconnected to the next support, a single unit may be readily removed or replaced. Lubrication of bearings 6a, 6b and gear 7 (Fig. 6) is by a pair of nozzle openings 22a, 22b from a passage 20 to which oil is supplied under pressure. In the event of wire breakage or loss of tension, the faulty wire will move out of its normal straight path to the guide plate 106 (Fig. 5), and assume a curved path g, making electrical contact between a ring 107 and the earthed wire, and thus stopping the drive motor. A wire 2 (Fig. 8A) withdrawn from a bobbin 1 passes round a pulley 309 on a spring-biassed arm 302, and then round a fixed pulley 310. A braided brake-band 311 is attached to the arm 302 at 315, its other end being fixed at 312. An increase in tension of the wire moves arm 302, reducing the restraint imposed by the brake on the bobbin. Spring 307, biassing the arm, may be adjusted by attaching- one of its ends in any of a number of holes 308. The brake band tension is similarly adjustable at 315, and has a fine adjustment screw 313.
