Abstract
1378515 Photo-electrie position determining SIRA INSTITUTE 15 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 6903/71 Addition to 1147521 Heading H4D Apparatus for detecting the position of a lens on a rotatable support comprises a system for illuminating the lens and a photo-cell responsive to illumination reflected from the lens and producing a signal indicating the position of a surface of the lens facing the illuminating system with respect to the axis of rotation of the support, the illuminating system comprising a light source, a stationary mask having an aperture positioned in front of the source, an objective lens arrangement for projecting an image of the aperture on to the lens and a beam splitter arranged to pass light from the source on to the lens via the objective lens arrangement and to pass an image of the aperture reflected from the lens and passed back through the objective lens arrangement on to the photo-cell. A light source 3 illuminates an aperture in mask 4 via lens 12 and the aperture image is passed to lens 1 via objective lens 13 and beam splitter 14. The reflected image is passed by beam splitter 14 on to photodeteotor 10 via mask 9. The photodetector produces signals indicative of the position of lens surface 7 with respect to the rotation axis of support 2 and the lens is adjusted manually until the signals indicate coincidence of the lens surface 7 and support axis. The image may be focussed on to the bottom lens surface. Figs. 2 to 7 (not shown) illustrate various alternative arrangements of the illuminating system. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates an electronic circuit suitable for displaying the signals from the photodetector on a cathode-ray tube. The signals may appear as a circle, the radius of which is proportional to the centring error. The signals may alternatively be fed to meters, each meter giving the error in a particular direction.
