Abstract

1378299 Structural joints H-W DUPREE 9 Dec 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 57362/71 Heading F2M [Also in Division B6] Hollow extruded plastics members 4, Fig. 1, having ribs 5 to define compartments are joined by plastics connectors 1 and la provided with tenons 2, said tenons 2 having teeth 3 on their outer surfaces which co-operate with teeth formed on both ends of the inner surfaces of members 4, said teeth in members 4 extending transverse to the direction of extrusion. The tenons may be of U-section (Fig. 4, not shown). The teeth in the hollow members 4 are formed after extrusion by an embossing tool. The tool may comprise two embossing jaws 11, Fig. 3, provided with teeth 12 on their outer faces. An expandable wedge 13 is located between jaws 11, the wedge 13 and jaws 11 have co-operating inclined faces 15, 14 so that when the wedge 13 and jaws 11 are relatively displaced the jaws are pressed against the member 4. The walls of member 4 are softened prior to or during em- -bossing, e.g. by heating jaws 11 or the boundary between jaws 11 and member 4. Counter pressure jaws 10 are provided and may be cooled. Alternatively, the tool may comprise a toothed tenon (6, Fig. 2, not shown). The walls of member 4 provided with the teeth are thicker than the other walls, but decrease in thickness towards the edges (see Fig. 4a, not shown). The teeth on a tenon may be bevelled along the longitudinal edges (see Fig. 4).
