Abstract

1377974 Laminated foam material DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 22 Sept 1972 [22 Sept 1971] 44091/71 Headings B5N and B5A [Also in Division C3] A laminated syntactic foam material comprises layers of low density expanded foam bodies (i.e. having a density that of or less than that of expanded polystyrene) retained in a matrix comprising hollow spherical bodies in a cured epoxy resin. The foam bodies may be cuboid shaped expanded polystyrene. The laminated syntactic foam is made by cutting a sheet of expanded polystyrene, as shown in Fig. 2, to form cuboid bodies which are held in position by uncut material 6 and the inverted sheet is placed in a mould 7, (Fig. 3) on top of a layer 8 of a mixture of uncured epoxy resin and hollow spheres, the resin is allowed to cure thereby bonding the sheet thereto, the cuboid bodies are then cut free from their neighbours and more mixed uncured epoxy resin and hollow spheres are added to box 7 so as to fill the intercuboid spaces 2 and cover the cuboids 1. A second inverted sheet, as shown in Fig. 2, is then placed in box 7 and the epoxy resin is allowed to cure. Repetition of these steps allows any derived thickness to be achieved.
