Abstract

1377891 Pyroelectric device MARCONI CO Ltd 19 Sept 1973 [11 Jan 1973] 1483/73 Heading H1K A pyroelectric I.R. or heat detector comprises a sheet of plastics material bearing a pair of electrodes on the same major surface of the sheet wherein the region of the sheet in contact with the conductors has been rendered pyroelectric by the application of an electric field. In operation a change in intensity of the I.R. radiation incident on the region produces a change in the state of electrical polarization of the region and thus results in a voltage between the conductors. A sheet of polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene fluoride, polyacrylonitrile, polytrifluorochloroethylene or a polyamide is provided with a pair of interdigitated silver electrodes and the surface of the electrodes is blackened by sulphiding to aid heat absorption. The sheet and conductors are heated to the softening point of the sheet while an electric field is applied across the conductors. The field is maintained while the sheet cools.
