Abstract

1377698 Extruded conductor coating SIEMENS AG 30 Oct 1972 [28 Jan 1972] 50009/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Insulated electric conductors are produced by extruding uncrosslinked polyethylene of density at least 0À935 g./cc. on to the conductors to form a coating of uncrosslinked polyethylene, incorporating a peroxide cross-linking agent in the uncrosslinked polyethylene before, during or after extrusion, and heating the coated conductors at approximately atmospheric pressure and at a temperature of at least 220‹ C. to effect crosslinking. The peroxide, e.g. di-t.butyl peroxide, may be incorporated in the extruded coating by diffusion, or may be incorporated in powdered or granulated polyethylene before extrusion and the extrusion temperature thereof reduced by coating the particles with a lubricant, e.g. a silicone oil or polyglycol. Heating may be effected in a salt bath, liquid bath or fluidized bed or by hot air and in examples extruded coatings are crosslinked in a salt bath of potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate.
