Abstract
1377512 Photoinitiators KALLE AG 7 Dec 1971 [9 Dec 1970] 56747/61 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] A photopolymerizable composition comprises a binder, a polymerizable vinyl or vinylidene compound and a photoinitiator of the formula R-(CH=CH) n -CO-(CH=CH) n -R<SP>1</SP> where R is a C 6 to C 12 aryl or a C 4 to C 12 heterocyclic aromatic radical, either of which may be substituted, R<SP>1</SP> is a group as defined for R or a C 1 to C 4 alkyl group, which may also be substituted, n is 1 or 2 and m is 0 or 1. Preferably R and R<SP>1</SP> are aryl or heterocyclic radicals, at least one having an alkoxy, alkylene dioxy or dialkylamino substituent. The binder is preferably an alkalisoluble or swellable resin, so that non-polymerized parts of the composition can be removed or softened by an alkaline developing agent, such as a sodium phosphate. The monomer may be an acrylate or methacrylate ester, preferably of a polyhydric alcohol. Other additives may also be present, e.g. hydrogen donors, sensitizers, inhibitors and conventional photoinitiators. Examples describe compositions in which the binder is a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer or a cellulose hydrogen phthalate, mixed with one or more of α-methylstyrene-vinyl toluene copolymer, cellulose acetate butyrate, polyvinyl acetate, polymethyl methacrylate and a chlorinated diphenyl resin; the monomer is trimethylol-ethane or -propane triacrylate; and in some cases a phenolic inhibitor and/or a dye (methyl violet, brilliant green, eosine, or pararosaniline) and/or a sensitizer (2,5-bis-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)oxadiazole-1,3- 4 or 2-(4-diethylaminophenyl) phenanthro-(9- 10)-4,5-oxazole-1,3) are also included. The compositions are coated on to plates or films from butanone solution and exposed image-wise, using a carbon arc lamp or a xenon lamp.
