Abstract

1377221 Highway crash barriers DUNLOP Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [16 Jan 1971] 2202/71 Heading E1G [Also in Division F2] A shock absorbing device for mounting a highway crash barrier (not shown) comprises a deformable member (ductile steel tube 30 or tubes 7, 8 or plates 17), and a primary deforming means (plunger 5 with enlarged head 6 or ball-bearings 16) and a secondary deforming means (a rigid sleeve 31 surrounding and moving with the plunger or a sleeve 9a, 10a or layer 19 of elastomeric material) acting on opposite surfaces of the deformable member. A shock load applied to the device causes the deformable member to be deformed by the primary deforming means and subsequently redeformed by the secondary deforming means. In Fig. 1, an axial shock load causes the head 6 of the plunger 5 to deform the tubes 7, 8. Since the elastomeric sleeve 9a, 10a is confined and therefore substantially incompressible, as the plunger moves on and forms another bulge in the tubes 7, 8, the preceding bulge is forced out by the elastomeric sleeve 9a, 10a. On a transverse load ball bearings 16 deform a plate 17, which is re-deformed by the elastomeric layer 19. In Fig. 3, the head 6 of the plunger 5 expands the ductile tube 30 and then the tapered end of the sleeve 31 squeezes it back into shape.
