Abstract

1377284 Car-hire systems L M H SCHIMMELPENNINCK 29 Feb 1972 [4 March 1971] 9241/72 Heading G4T A number of car-hire stations, at any of which a car may be collected at the start of a journey or returned at the end of a journey, are all connected by communication links to a central control. A user of the system presents himself at his chosen starting station and, via the link from this station, informs the central control of his identity (e.g. by means of a personal punched card), and of his chosen destination station (e.g. by closing a corresponding one of a number of contacts). On the request being accepted by the central control, the latter may initiate the delivery of a car key to the user from a magazine of keys at the starting station. On arriving at the destination station, the user reports himself to the central control, e.g. by merely deliverying the car key to a device linked to the central control. The cars may be electrically driven, in which case their batteries may be automatically re-charged when the car is returned to the car stand at each station, contact with a charging means being automatically made when the car is positioned on the stand. If the central control senses a shortage of cars at a particular station, it may automatically couple one or more cars to a car from another station which is bound for the station suffering from the shortage. The duration of hire may be registered by the central control and a charge applied to the user's account.
