Abstract

137,724. Cocking, W. A., and Hean, W. E. May 3, 1919. Mercury cut-outs.-An automatic cut-out, particularly for use between a magneto and a rectifier such as that described in Specification 135,926, [Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting &c.], comprises a U-shaped chamber 1 containing mercury, with one or more contacts 6 above the normal level of the mercury. The branch 3 of the chamber, containing the contact is connected to the induction pipe of an internalcombustion engine driving the magneto, and the other branch to the atmosphere or to the exhaust pipe, so that while the engine is running above a defined speed, the mercury is sucked or forced up the chamber 3 and the circuit completed through the contacts 5, 6. A pair of diaphragms 7 with cotton-wool packing is placed in the branch 3 to prevent the mercury from leaving it, and a similar stop may be placed in the other branch. The chamber may be of insulating or conducting material. A contact may be placed in the middle of the chamber in addition to the contacts 6 and the contact 5.
