1377155 Castors FLEXELLO CASTORS & WHEELS Ltd 9 Nov 1972 [25 July 1972] 34770/72 Heading A4U [Also in Division F2] A castor 5 is supported for rolling motion by a supporting structure 1, 2, 3 and can be braked by a braking element 30 which comprises a cylindrical stem 8 vertically reciprocable in a bore 9 in a bush 6 and having a head 10 with a shallow frusto-conical end surface 11 for abutting the outer periphery of the castor 5 the element 30 is biased to an upper inoperative position by a spring 13 and is moved to its lower braking position by depression of a flexible brake actuating strip 16, the strip 16 being locatable in its depressed position to hold the brake engaged. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the strip 16 is of spring steel and is received in stepped slots each having portions 25, 26 in brackets 17, 18 which are bolted to a plate 1 of the supporting structure. The strip 16 has a tongue 22 received in the deep portion 25 of the slot in bracket 17, an intermediate portion 27 and a portion of reduced width constituting an operating lever 28. The strip 16 is first depressed to move element 30 to the braking position, pivoting for this vertical movement taking part abut tongue 22 engaging slot in bracket 17, and the lever 28 is then moved horizontally about this slot with part of lever 28 held in shallow slot portion 26 of bracket 18 and held depressed to hold the element 30 in its braking position. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 a latch assembly 31 comprising a latch 36 pivotable about a pin 35 acts to hold strip 16 in its depressed position. As lever 28 is depressed a detent 37 of the latch 36 is moved to engage the undersurface of plate 1 to hold strip 16 in its depressed position. To release the brake the latch 36 is moved, for example by the operator's foot, until detent 37 is clear of plate 1 whereupon the latch 36 springs to the inoperative position by the action of spring 38 and the strip 16 rises to release the brake.
