Abstract
1377062 Axial flow fans JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 19 Nov 1971 [28 Nov 1970] 56648/70 Heading F1C [Also in Division H2] A control system for an electric motor which drives the fan of an internal combustion engine cooling system comprises an indicator for indicating when the motor is energized, and a device for detecting the temperature of the coolant and for energizing the motor when this exceeds a particular value, the device being heated by an electric current to a temperature in excess of that particular value (thereby causing the motor to be energized) when the coolant in the system is below a certain level irrespective of the coolant temperature. As shown in Fig. 2 detecting device 12 comprises a bi-metallic strip 13 which operates a switch to energize the motor 11 and lamp 16 and which is heated by a current passed through element 15. The device 12 is normally submerged in the coolant and the motor energized only when the coolant temperature exceeds a particular value, but when the coolant level drops below the device element 15 causes the switch to be operated irrespective of the coolant temperature. Alternatively, Fig. 5, the detection device comprises heating element 20 and sensing resistor 21, both positive coefficient of resistance resistors. When the coolant temperature exceeds a particular value or the coolant level below a particular level transistors 31, 35 become conductive to energize relay coil 30 thereby closing the relay contacts 29 to energize the motor 11 and loop 16.
