Abstract

1376561 Plate heat exchangers MODINE MFG CO 10 Jan 1973 1286/73 Heading F4S A heat exchanger 10 comprises a stack of plates joined to one another at areas 19, 20, 22 and shaped to provide for a first fluid a succession of chambers 26 open at their inner ends and communicating at their outer ends with chambers 23 together constituting a manifold 25, said first fluid flowing outwardly through one group of the chambers 26 to the manifold 25, and then inwardly through a second group of the chambers 26; said plate assembly providing also for a second fluid, a plurality of chambers 21 in heat exchange with the chambers 26. The plates may also be joined together at areas 35 providing a series of chambers 36 constituting a manifold 38. A turbulizer fin 47 comprising a plate with recesses therein (see Figs. 9 and 10) may be provided in the passages 26 and also in the chambers 23. The heat exchanger is intended as an oil cooler in an I.C. engine block 11, the oil to be cooled comprising the first fluid and the engine coolant the second fluid. As shown, the coolant enters the casing 43 of the heat exchanger via an inlet 14, Fig. 1, and flows through the interplate spaces 21 to a casing outlet 15. The engine oil flows from the engine block 11 via a passage 12 to a chamber defined by a gasket 53. From this chamber the oil flows via ports 41 and manifold 38 to an annular chamber 46 formed at one end of the heat exchanger by a cover 43. From the chamber 46 the oil flows via ports 58 either to an oil filter 55, Fig. 1, or to a return header (56, Fig. 2) from whence it returns to the inlet end of a pipe 31 extending centrally through the heat exchanger. From the inlet end of pipe 31 the oil flows via ports 32 to and through the heat exchange chambers 26 and manifold 25, and thence via ports 33 in the pipe 31 to the oil return passage 13 in the engine block 11. On starting-up, when the oil is cold and viscous, sufficient pressure is exerted by the oil on a by-pass valve 60 to open the valve and so by-pass the cooling passages 26 of the heat exchanger until the oil is sufficiently warm. As seen more particularly in Fig. 5, there are three of the manifolds 38 and three of the manifolds 25 in the plate assembly. A further arrangement is described (Figs. 11-14) in which the by-pass path (77) is within the plate assembly.
