Abstract
1376412 Moulding cable sheaths HOTSPLICER CORP 24 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 8702/72 Heading B5A Portable apparatus for splicing electrical cable or air hose, components comprises upper and lower aluminium platens 40, 42 supporting upper and lower mould halves 44, 46 and an injection cylinder 162 provided with a manually operated piston 166. To allow the mould to be opened and closed, the upper platen 40 comprises a front part 110 hinged to a rear part 120 vertically slidable upon guide pins 52, 54 by means of a manually operated screw rod 56. Additional clamps 76, 78 pivoted to the lower platen 42 assist the rod 56 in holding the platens together during moulding. To allow venting, the upper platen 40 and mould half 44 are provided with aligned openings 200, 202 that can be closed by pivotable tabs 206d and the piston 166 is spaced from the wall of the cylinder 162. The platens 40, 42 are heated by cartridge or strip heaters (97, 99, Fig. 4) controlled by thermometers 104, 106 and a control unit 86a. The ends of the mould halves 44, 46 may project beyond the platens and fastened together by bolts 210, 212 and may be internally ribbed (Fig. 3). The main embodiment involves the application of a simple linear (as shown), Y- or T-shaped splice to high voltage cable portions 10, 12 and comprises welding the conductors (14, 14<SP>1</SP>, Figs. 1a, 1b) together, winding a tape sheet and/or slitted sleeve of insulating or semiconductor material, e.g. lamp-black filled unvulcanized ethylene-propylene rubber about the conductors, applying an electrical shield (20), positioning the cable portions 10, 12 within the mould, injecting an insulating material from the cylinder 162 and then curing the materials. A layer of linen tape may be wrapped about the parts of the cable portions 10, 12 coming into contact with the mould parts. The insulating material may comprise neoprene rubber, ethylene-propylene rubber, P.V.C., polyurethane, polyethylene, rubber, cross-linked polyethylene or silicone. The injection cylinder may be removed during curing and replaced with a plug.
