1376277 Sustained release medicaments BATTELLE-INSTITUT eV 9 May 1973 22083/ 73 Heading A5B Sustained release medicaments comprise a medicament present (either as such or as a solution) in the "inkwell pores" of a porous solid which is substantially insoluble in body fluids. The said pores comprise cavities in the solid connected to the surface by a narrower "neck" which has a mean diameter less than half that of the cavity and is below 0.1Ám. The solid may be a "ceramic" oxide, e.g. aluminium, zirconium or silicon oxide, a metal or a synthetic polymer. Various methods of preparing materials having the requisite properties are given including compression moulding and optionally, sintering, dehydrating oxide or hydroxide gels and hydrolysing alcoholates in organic solvents. The active material may be mixed with the starting materials in such processes or the product may be impregnated with the molten material or with solutions thereof, the solvent of which may subsequently be removed. Examples relate to products comprising a) benzoic acid in silica gel and b) 1- propyl-1-cyclohexyl - 2 - methylaminopropane HCI in Aluminium oxide.
