Abstract

1376162 Making battery plate grids JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 14 April 1972 [29 April 1971] 12301/71 Heading B3A [Also in Division H1] A method of making a battery plate grid 11 in which the grid material is dispersion strengthened lead comprises providing a strip of dispersion strengthened lead containing fibrous or plate-like inclusions extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip, blanking the strip to make a preformed grid and coining the preformed grid to shape the members of the grid so that the inclusions adjacent the surface of each grid member extend substantially parallel to the surface of the member. Prior to blanking, the grid material is in the form of a plain strip which may be pre-shaped to define some at least of the members of the preformed grid. Blanking produces grid members of substantially rectangular cross-section and the members 12 are coined to a rhomboidal cross-section by tools 15, the lines 10 indicating the flow of the metal. The members 14 are similarly coined to a triangular cross-section and the sets of members 14a, 14b which are interconnected, may be displaced oppositely normal to the plane of the grid intermediate their connections. The orientation of the inclusions increases the resistance of the surface of the grid to acid attack.
