Abstract

1374995 Light guides RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 13 Sept 1972 [16 Sept 1971] 43200/71 Heading G2J [Also in Division G5] An optical display device, e.g. for road signs, comprises a plurality of light guides, e.g glass fibre bundles 3, grouped together at one end 4 for illuminating by a light source, and arranged at the other end in a pattern (8) lying in a plane 7, and means 9, e.g. a screen, for diffusing or scattering emergent light, located near the plane 7. The bundles 3 have plugs 6 adapted to be inserted, preferably removably, in apertures 7a in a support 7. In modifications, a reflector (11) surrounds the pattern (8), Fig. 5d (not shown), and a reflector (12) may divide the pattern Fig. 6b (not shown) or surround each bundle 3, Fig. 6c (not shown). The end 4 may be divided into two groups for alternative illuminating by the same or different sources to produce interpenetrating figures, Fig. 7 (not shown), and colour filters (18, 19) may be located at the end 4 between the light source 1 and the bundles 3, Figs. 9, 11 (not shown).
