Abstract

1373955 Viscosity pumps W A BULLDUGH 28 March 1972 [3 April 1971] 8594/71 Heading F I C A viscosity pump comprises a radial gap defined.between the rotor, stator and end-plates of a electric motor, inlet and outlet ports communicating with the gap, and a barrier means between the inlet and outlet ports. A shaded-pole rotor 1, Figs. 1 and 2, is journalled on a stationary shaft 13 carried by end plates 10. Fluid to be pumped is suppled via an inlet port 7 to the peripheral gap 6 between the rotor 1 and the stator 2, and is discharged via an outlet port 8, sealing between the ports 7, 8 being provided by a tongue 9 disposed axially or askew and wiping against the rotor. The rotor may instead be fixed to a shaft journalled in in the end-plates 10, and the shaft may then extend through one or both end-plates to drive an external load. There may be three or more pairs of ports 7, 8 and associated tongues, Fig. 4, so that the rotor is self-aligned hydrodynamically. Recesses 15 in the stator are shaped so that each gap 6 decreases in height towards its outlet port 8. A secondary pumping gap 24 in series with. the main pumping gap 6 may be afforded between the stationary shaft 13 and the rotor interior 25. The tongue may be flexible or may be pressed into contact with the rotor by a spring or by hydraulic pressure supplied from the outlet port 8 or another source. The tongue 9 may stand clear of the rotor or may have a hydrodynamic tilt, or may be replaced by a revolving cylinder bearing against the rotor. The tongue 9 may be omitted, the rotor axis then being eccentric to the stator so that the rotor bears against the stator at a point between the ports 7, 8. The ports 7, 8 may be elongated axially, staggered towards opposite ends of the stator or located in opposite end-plates 10, and the gap 6 may in the latter case comprise a helical groove formed in the stator or the rotor. In the pump shown in Fig. 6, the outer member 2 forms a rotor carrying fan blades 17 and the inner member 1 forms a stator carrying the tongue 9 and formed with ports 7, 8 which extend into a stationary shaft 16. The pump may be submersible.
