Abstract

1373782 Fibre-plastics laminates ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 5 Oct 1972 [5 Oct 1971] 46349/71 Headings B5N and B5A Fibre-reinforced plastics material is made by impregnating at least one layer of a fibrous material (A) with synthetic resin, passing the material through a first die under such conditions of temperature and time that the impregnant thoroughly wets the material and is not fully set (but is preferably gelled), applying a layer of fibrous material (B) over at least part (preferably the whole) of the surface of material (A), impregnating material (B) with synthetic resin, and passing the laminated product through a second die under such conditions of temperature and time that all the impregnant is fully set. The fibrous material (A) may comprise a plurality of layers of woven or non- woven glass, sisal or polyester, which may either be fed together through a chamber into which the impregnant resin is introduced or be separately impregnated and pressed together before or during passage through the first die. The impregnated material (A) may have core layers of balsa wood, asbestos, steel wire or aluminium incorporated therebetween before passage through the first die. After passage through the first die the structure may be coated with resin, and, before application of material (B), may be degreased or shot-blasted. The fibrous material (B) may be continuous filament tow or woven continuous filament tow of carbon fibres, and may be formed as a series of strips. The impregnant resins for (A) and (B) may be the same or different and may be polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyester or epoxy resin. The process may be carried out centinuously by passing the materials through two series of units each comprising an impregnation chamber into which resin is injected as the materials pass through and a die which is heated by platens such that it comprises a cool portion followed by a hot portion (see Fig. 2, not shown), the hot portion being longer in the second die to ensure full setting. Specified cool and hot temperatures are 15-70‹ C. and 115-135‹ C. for isophthalic polyester. The two dies may be of the same or different cross-sectional shape and the second die should allow a wider gap than the first. The fibrous materials (A) and (B) may be partially impregnated, before the process is carried out, by passage through a bath of resin.
