Abstract

1373593 Glides PA THRIFT 20 March 1973 [30 May 1972] 25189/72 Heading A4U [Also in Divisions A6 and E2] A glide for furniture comprises two relatively movable portions 12, 13 biased apart by means such as a spring 14, the portion 12 having a gliding surface 18 for engaging the ground and the portion 13 having a gripping surface 24 normally spaced from the ground and having a coefficient of friction greater than that of the surface 18, the spring 14 permitting the surface 24 to engage the ground upon a predetermined weight being applied to the portion 13. The portion 12 may be formed of nylon and the portion 13 comprises a part 19 of aluminium alloy and a plug 23 formed of natural, synthetic or thermo-plastic rubber, ethylene, vinylacetate or P.V.C. or compounds of these. The part 19 is retained within the portion 12 by a rib 25 past which it is a snap-fit. A spigot 30 attached to the part 19 carries a ball 31 which is engaged in a bore 33 of a member 32 mounted on the end of a leg 11, the ball being retained in the bore 33 by a turned rib 34, a nylon bearing 35, a Belville spring washer 36 and a plug 37. The portion 13 may be an integral moulding. The portion 12 may be located concentrically within the portion 13. The Belville washer may be replaced by a resilient pad. Although the glide may be used on any article of furniture, e.g. an easy chair, it is particularly useful for a support frame for a disabled person, Fig.2 (not shown.
