Abstract

1373401 Air filter for I.C. engine GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 13 Jan 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1837/71 Heading B1T The casing of an I.C. engine intake air filter comprises a lower moulded plastics shell 2, with an integral trough 3 forming the lower part of an intake tube, and a pressed metal cover 5, 6 whose periphery is crimped over a flange 8 on the shell and trough, the cover having an opening 9 through which a filter element 11 may be inserted. The opening 9 is closed by the upper end disc 15 of the filter element and by a metal or plastics plate 10, disc 15 making separate seals with the plate 10 and with cover 5, 6 and being exposed. The seals are made by the pressure exerted by plate 10, which is screwed to shell 2 at 26. The shell 2 and trough 3 may have integral connections 20, 21 for a crankcase breather and for an alternative hot air inlet, or these connections could be secured by adhesive or snap fastenings to the shell. The shell and trough may be compression moulded of glass-filled polyester or injection moulded of glass-filled nylon. Valve 22 in tube 4 is actuated by a diaphragm motor 25 to control proportions of warm and cold air drawn into the filter. Plate 10 is reinforced by internal and external ribs.
