Abstract

1373070 Pneumatic actuators KELOR Ltd 18 April 1973 [19 April 1972] 18030/72 Heading F1D A pneumatic actuator 1, 2, Fig. 1, with return springs 3 has valve means 17, 18 which admit compressed air to a chamber 1 to displace the pistons 2 and load the springs 3 and then, at a selected position of the piston on the return stroke, transfer some of the air to chambers 7 to assist the springs and open the chamber 1 to atmosphere. Each piston 2 has a rack 2A which meshes with a pinion 4 on a shaft 5. The latter may operate a valve and also carries a cam 21 which controls the movements of the piston 18. Means other than the cam 21 may control the valve means 17, 18. When compressed air is supplied to port 16 elements 17, 18 are forced apart to connect chambers 7 to atmosphere via ports 12, 15, Fig. 2 (not shown). Compressed air passes to chamber 6 via ports 16, 13 pushing the pistons 2 apart and turning cam 21 through 90 degrees. When the air supply is cut off and port 16 is connected to atmosphere the shuttle valve 17 is urged by spring 19 into contact with element 18. Chambers 6, 7 are now inter-connected via ports 12, 13 and pistons 2 are urged together by springs 3 causing transfer to air from chamber 6 to chambers 7, Fig. 3 (not shown). When sufficient air has been transferred cam 21 moves elements 18, 17 so that chamber 6 is exhausted to atmosphere and port 12 is closed to trap the air in chambers 7, Fig. 4 (not shown).
