Abstract

1372358 Chromium-containing coagulants ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 12 Nov 1971 [20 Nov 1970] 55407/70 Headings C1A and C1C A coagulant for use in treating contaminated water is made by dissolving chrome residue wholly or partially in a strong mineral acid. "Chrome residue" refers to the residue left after the extraction of chromium from chrome ore. The residue consists principally of metal oxides, generally Fe2O3, Al2O3, MgO and Cr2O3. Generally the coagulants consist of the chlorides and/or sulphates of ferric iron, aluminium, trivalent chromium and magnesium, substantially free from hexavalent chromium. The coagulant can be used in the treatment of water, industrial effluents, sewage, sludge or other aqueous solutions or suspensions containing contaminants such as inorganic, bacterial or colloidal organic matter. In typical examples (4) dry chrome ore residue is refluxed with sulphuric acid and iron powder (to reduce any hexavalent chromium), calcium oxide is added and the solution is then filtered; (6) 5% solids sludge from domestic sanitary sewage is added to solution prepared as in (4), of different dilutions and the filterability is determined.
