Abstract

1372139 Automatic speed control INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 13 Oct 1972 [15 Nov 1971] 47306/72 Heading G3R The reel motors of an unbuffered tape drive are jointly controlled in accordance with changes in the detected values of tape speed and tension. In the embodiment shown the tape reels 10, 13 are driven by motors 11, 14 respectively which are controlled differentially by network 25 in accordance with speed and tension error signals produced by comparator 20. The wide tape 12 carries groups of longitudinal data tracks A, B and centrally disposed prerecorded reference tracks 15 which co-operate with head 19. An actual speed signal is derived from the prerecorded tracks and a tension signal provided by a known method e.g. feeler, pressure jet or load cell transducer. The actual signals are compared with command signals at 23, 24 in comparator 20. Preferably the control head 20 is mounted adjacent the data reading head 32 and also derives lateral position information whereby the actuator 34 can be made to align the reading head with the data tracks. In a modification, Fig.2 (not shown), the data head spans the full width of the tape.
