Abstract

1371671 Automatic control of tension AMPEX CORP 27 Jan 1972 3829/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division G5] In a magnetic tape transport system comprising a capstan 28 Fig.2 and transducing heads 29, 31 between a pair of reels 41, 43 and in which tape loops 36, 37 are tensioned by differential pressure in columns 17 having sensing means for controlling the reel drives, the sides of the columns 17 diverge with increased loop length whereby the tape tension is increased with length and as shown, the loop 36 on the side of the take-up spool 41 is arranged to be longer than the loop 37 on the side of the supply spool 43 whereby frictional drag on the heads 29, 31 is compensated for. The tape tension is also thereby equalized on opposite sides of the capstan 28 to avoid slippage; there being no pinch roller provided. The loops 36, 37 are sensed by a pair of photo-cells 26 illuminated from strip lamps 24. During fast-rewind, only the loop in the column 17 associated with the supply reel 41 Fig.8 is used to control the motors for the reels 41, 43. In operation the fast-rewind supply reel 41 is driven to maintain a long loop towards position 163 and is decreased in speed only when the length is exceeded. Similarly the take-up reel 43 on fastrewind tries to maintain a short loop and is decreased in speed only when the loop is short of the position 168. The arrangement is therefore such that at least one of the reels 41, 43 will be running at its maximum speed and a maximum possible speed of rewind is obtained. The fastrewind means forms the subject of the claims of Specification 1371672. The complete system of automatic control is described with reference to Fig.7 (not shown) which illustrates a circuit including the controller (109) for amplifiers (133, 134) driving the reel motors (135, 136) and associated with error detectors (141, 142) incorporating the photo-cells 26 Fig.2.
