Abstract

1371248 Non-metallic springs J H FENNER & CO Ltd 15 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 7057/72 Heading F2S A resilient mounting for a vehicle engine comprises U-shaped members 10, 12 with a limb 22 or 21 lying between the limbs 21, 23 or 20, 22 of the other, at least the outer pairs of the sides of the limbs 20, 21 and 22, 23 facing one another being connected by elastomeric elements 14 and 18; the two outer limbs 20, 23 are connectible respectively to the engine or the vehicle (with the limbs 20-23 at a slight angle to the vertical) and the two inner limbs 21, 22 have free end portions 24, 25 at a distance from further elastomeric elements 28, 30 in the bases of the U-shaped members but intended to abut and compress these elements upon abnormal movement of the engine, e.g. due to rough ground. The weight of the engine subjects only the elements 14, 16 and 18 to stresses, mainly shear stresses and relatively low stiffness characteristics accommodate normal engine vibrations before the elements 28, 30 are employed. The transition to higher stiffness is gradual because of the 0-45 degrees angle of the end portions 24, 25 to the U-bases. Instead of the end portions being angled, the surfaces of elements 28, 30 may be sloped. The elements 14, 18 may be of rectangular, instead of the shown parallelogram-shape in section; To combat torque-reaction forces, the mountings on the two sides of the engine are oppositely disposed. Instead of pairs of ears 32, each U- member 10, 12 may have a threaded stud and locating lug secured to it. The combined transverse dimension of the end portions 24, 25 may be greater than the transverse spacing between the limbs 21 and 23 or 20 and 22 so that the U-members are interlocked and support the engine even if the elastomeric elements fail. In a further embodiment, instead of the single central element 16, there are separate elements (34, 36) each bonded to one of the limbs 21 or 22.
