Abstract

1370912 Coating apparatus C I C RALPHS Ltd 19 May 1972 [19 May 1971] 15879/71 Heading B2L Apparatus for applying thermoplastic adhesive comprises a reservoir 8 for the material a piston and cylinder pump 11 for ejecting a quantity of adhesive from the reservoir past a one way valve 9 to a channel 7 from which it is ejected through one or more nozzles 5 by air passing through a passageway 3. The thermoplastic adhesive is fed from a storage reel 26 by a reciprocating platform 30 controlled by a pneumatic piston (not shown). The piston has a variable stroke and is operated upon demands for adhesive. Clamping jaws 29 grip the rod to feed the adhesive and jaws 28 prevent reverse motion. The adhesive rod moves into a spiral chamber 20 and as it is melted by heaters 2 passes into a reservoir 8. A pneumatically driven piston 11 ejects a quantity of molten adhesive past a valve 9 into a passage 7. Air from a pipe 4 which may be admitted as the piston 11 moves or may be continuously admitted carries the adhesive through the nozzles 5. The piston 11 is a loose fit in its cylinder to allow gas in the adhesive to escape.
