Abstract
1370480 Laminates BAYER AG 26 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 55027/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A laminate comprises a substrate of an impact-resistant clear first plastics material coated on one or both sides with a seond plastics material having a coefficient of static friction of no more than 0À5, a modulus of elasticity between 200 and 2000 Kp./cm.<SP>2</SP>, a maximum tolerated surface-limiting work in the linear region of the stress-strain, diagram, determined from high speed tear test at 10 m./sec. on a test rod according to Buchmann, of less than 2500 mKp/sÀl/cm.<SP>2</SP> and a speed of recovery after being stressed of 1-10 m./sec. The first plastics material is a polycarbonate, polyethylene gly. col terephthalate, polyether, e.g., polyphenylene oxide, polysulphone, polyamide, plasticized or unplasticized cellulose ester, polymethyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate copolymer, polymethyl pentene-1, polydiethylene glycol-bisallyl carbonate, epoxide or unsaturated polyester resin. The second plastics material, which may be a polyurethane or unsaturated polyester resin, may be applied to the substrate in the form of a liquid or solution by spreading, spraying or dipping. Alternatively when using a second plastics material hardenable by curing the second platics material may be coated in the uncured state in the absence of moisture on a sheet of glass, the substrate placed on top of the uncured second plastics material while avoiding the formation of bubbles, the free surface of the substrate coated with further uncured second plastics material, a second sheet of glass placed on top of the further coating while avoiding the formation of bubbles, the second plastics material allowed to cure at ambient or slightly elevated temperature and the sheets of glass removed. The laminates may be used in conjunction with sheets of glass in the production of laminated safety sheets. When using a polyurethane coating material adhesion may be promoted by means of a silane, chromic nitrate or chromium trioxide. In Examples (3) a sheet of clear polycarbonate is coated with a polyurethane, (4) a sheet of transparent polyamide is coated with an unsaturated polyester, (6) a sheet of clear polycarbonate treated with γ-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane vapour is coated with a polyurethane and (7) a sheet of clear polycarbonate is coated with a polyurethane containing chromic nitrate.
