Abstract

1370470 Testing ethylene oxide sterilization ATESMO Ltd 4 Sept 1972 [3 Sept 1971] 41288/71 Heading G1B [Also in Division A5] A substance or device for use in testing an ethylene oxide sterilization process comprises a test material which exhibits a change in colour on exposure to ethylene oxide and which comprises a mixture of magnesium chloride, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and bromophenol blue supported on a carrier and/or contained in a container, the carrier and/or container being effective to delay the change in colour of the material until a predetermined level of exposure to ethylene oxide has been reached. The substance may comprise a dry mixture of magnesium chloride, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and bromophenol blue supported on powdered silica gel; the device may be in the form of an air-tight container in which the test material can be viewed and which has an aperture closed by a film permeable to ethylene oxide and moisture, for example a glass test tube the open end of which is closed by a film of low density polyethylene. To ensure that the change in colour is exhibited only upon exposure to ethylene oxide and moisture at a level which is known to provide sterility, the test material may be calibrated (and its composition adjusted if necessary) by means of tests employing conventional bacteriological test strips.
