Abstract

1370288 Glazing METAL BOX CO Ltd 1 Dec 1971 [16 Dec 1970] 59677/70 Heading C1M An article is glazed by being heated and contacted with (a) a particulate organic resin which is softened and adheres to the article and (b) a particulate glazing material having a higher melting point than the resin which is in a fluidized bed, such that the glazing material adheres to the surface, and firing the article to fuse the glaze and drive off at least part of the resin. Steps (a) and (b) may be performed simultaneousely in the same fluidized bed. All of the resin is preferably removed during firing and the melting point of the glaze should be no lower than the lowest temp. at which the resin may be burned off. The resin may be an epoxy resin, of particle size 1-60 Á and may be present in the fluidized bed to the extent of 1-2%. The article may be of ceramic material or metal. In an example, pre-heated unglazed tiles at about 200‹ C. were immersed in the fluidized bed for about ¢ minute. They were then kiln fired at 1100‹ C.
