Abstract
1370268 Rotary shaft seals SKF (UK) Ltd 23 Jan 1973 [3 Feb 1972] 5175/72 Heading F2B The impeller shaft 10 of a cooling water pump for an I.C. engine is sealed by means comprising a non-rotary elastomeric sealing ring 21 which is fixed to the pump casing 1 and is in sealing contact with a flange 20, sealingly secured to the shaft and spaced from the impeller 16. The shaft is mounted in a bearing 4 and the impeller has blades 17 facing the bearing. The ring 21 has an integral lip 23 in sealing contact with the flange 20 and is mounted on a ring 25 which is an interference fit in the casing 1 and is spaced from the bearing race 5 by projections 26 on the ring. The flange 20 is of mild steel coated with P.T.F.E. and is an interference fit on the shaft. The ring 21 is of nitrile rubber and the ring 25 is of nylon or other plastics. Alternatively, the ring 25 may be of metal and sealed to the casing 1 by an O- ring housed in a groove in its outer periphery. Any water leaking past the seal drains between the projections 26 through a drain-hole (not shown) in the casing.
