Abstract
1370091 Gamma ray densitometer NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 15 Sept 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 45172/70 Heading G1A A densitometer for diagnostic use to indicate density variations due to respiratory and cardiac cycle movements in a human subject comprises a rotatable "U" shaped member mounted on a column upstanding from a trolley platform the member carrying a gamma ray isotope in a screened housing towards the end of one arm which through the medium of a collimator projects a Y ray beam towards a scintillator and detector mounted on the other, the density being displayed or recorded by means mounted on the platform which indicates the rate of reception of Y rays above a predetermined energy level. A Cs 137 source, and a sodium iodide scintillator are exemplified, and considerable circuitry in which the discriminating level is adjustable and which includes selectable filters for investigating, respiratory action, vascular action, or both, is shown. The output may be recorded on magnetic tape or by a pen recorder, or may be displayed on an oscilloscope. The source housing may be of uranium and a variable attenuator may be included in the beam path to compensate for mattress thickness.
