Abstract
1370085 Dummy figures ALDERSON RESEARCH LABORATORIES Inc 22 Feb 1973 [9 June 1972] 8768/73 Heading G5G A leg for a test dummy comprises an upper leg member 10; a knee joint 12; and a lower leg member 14 including a simulated bone 52 having a resilient covering 54 to simulate flesh, the covering defining a deformable cavity 86 in the calf portion. The knee joint is constituted by a housing 26, first and second bars 44 pivotally secured to the housing 26, and a plate 50 secured between the bars and to the bone 52 which is thus offset forwardly from a line extending between the centre of rotation of the knee joint and the angle 58. The upper leg member 10 comprises a simulated femur including a tube 16 and a removable link rod 20 which can be used for strain gauging, with simulated flesh provided by upper and lower segments 30, 32 of vinyl skin and foam. The arrangement is such that the cavity 56 is deformed when the leg is flexed to contact the calf with the thigh (Fig. 3, not shown), whereby an extended range of motion, similar to that of the human leg, is provided. Further, the construction of the knee joint ensures that knee impact loads are transmitted directly to the femur, when the leg is bent, rather than through the joint, thereby avoiding damage to the knee hinge and permitting more accurate load measurements.
