Abstract

1369857 Ultrasonic measurement of force TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 12 Nov 1971 [24 Nov 1970] 62726/71 Heading H4D An axial force within an article is measured by causing forced oscillation of the article with ultrasonic waves; determining the resulting natural resonant frequency differential of the article between when the force is zero and when the force exists, and comparing the differential with the results of calibration measurements on a similar article. The natural frequency may be measured, using a calibrated oscillator driving a transducer applied to one face of the article (e.g. a bolt or a structural member of a building, automobile, ship or aircraft), as the interval between adjacent harmonics of the resonant frequency.
