Abstract
1369719 Prilling DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 April 1972 [16 April 1971] 17461/72 Heading B5A Prills are prepared from a molten or liquid substance, e.g. urea or a urea pyrolyzate, by introducing a stream of the substance through a conduit 30 into a liquid 11 which is maintained at a temperature below that at which the substance solidifies and with which it is immiscible, and shearing the molten or liquid stream, e.g. by the rotary blades 24, to form droplets and initiate crystallization. In the embodiment the input conduit 30 is surrounded by a steam jacket 26 and its outlet is adjustable relative to,the shearing blades by means of the threaded portion 33. The cooling liquid may be an alkane having 8 to 12 carbon atoms, preferably branched, or a mixture of such alkanes. It is maintained at a temperature between 25 and 135‹ C. by a cooling jacket 13 surrounding the vessel 10 or by selection of appropriate rate of flow-through of the cooling liquid. This is introduced through conduit 18 and drawn off as a slurry containing the prills by an outlet 35 the dimensions of which affect the size of prills produced. The speed of the blade may, e.g. be from 1000 to 7000 feet per minute and the stream outlet may terminate ¢ to 8 inches above the blade edge. An alternative form (Fig. 5, not shown) has tapered blades and the material supply conduit set at an angle. The prilled material may alternatively be sulphur, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, potassium or ammonium phosphates, potassium or calcium chloride, potassium or sodium nitrate, alkali metal hydroxides or other melts or suspensions or mixtures thereof but is especially applicable to materials which have a tendency to supercool instead of solidifying.
