Abstract
1369540 Pile drivers APPINGEDAMMER BRONSMOTORENFABRIEK NV 15 May 1972 [1 June 1971 31 Oct 1971] 22693/72 Heading B3H [Also in Division F2] A compressed air operated pile driver with a free falling ram hammer has a piston-cylinder lifting assembly to which air is selectively supplied and exhausted under the control of a valve assembly connected to the cylinder and comprising a chamber with an inlet valve and an outlet valve coupled together so that one is open when the other is closed. In a simple form the valve assembly has a compressed air inlet 4 and outlets 5 to the cylinder. The ducts are in the wall of a chamber 3 which is alternately pressurized and exhausted by valves 7, 9. The valves are coupled by a rod 10 which has a balancing piston 14. The rod is actuated automatically or manually. The outlets 5 are connected by pipes 25, Fig. 5, to lifting cylinders 24 whose pistons 26 are connected by rods 28 to the ram hammer 30. The valves 7, 9 need not be rigidly connected but may employ a spring system to ensure that one valve is fully closed before the other is opened, Figs. 2-4 (not shown) or be separate and operated by a cam-shaft. In order to avoid long lengths of pipe between the valve assembly and the lifting cylinder in an alternative embodiment, Fig. 7, the chamber of the valve assembly is formed at the lower end of the cylinder. The valves are in the form of a sleeve 32 which controls inlet port 4 and exhaust ports 8 under the control of a rod 10. In a further modification, Fig. 9, the valve sleeve 32 is moved under the control of air pressure supplied to a chamber 44 under the closed end 42 of the sleeve. Alternatively the sleeve may have a flange (42), Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), which acts as a piston to raise and/or lower the sleeve. The valve assembly and lifting cylinder may comprise a guide for the ram hammer (26), Fig. 10 (not shown), which extends through the valve sleeve for impacting against an anvil (38). In the latter case only one cylinder need be provided.
