Abstract

1369350 De-icing apparatus I A LEVIN A Y LEVIN N E FEDOROV I A ROGOV E E AFANASON E G TURYANSKY 14 Nov 1972 52582/72 Headings B7V and B7W [Also in Division H4] A device for de-icing a thin-walled structure such as an aircraft wing 1 includes apparatus for converting electrical pulses into mechanical impulses acting on the wall, comprising a pair of electrical conductors 7, 8 disposed so that current flowing through them causes their relative displacement and thus elastic deformation of the wall. Conducting bars 7, 8 are disposed in grooves 5 and 6 of a leading edge spar 2, and are connected by a conductor 11 and receive electrical pulses from a source 13, the resultant displacement of the bars acting on the skins 3, 4, to which they are attached by insulating spacers 9, 10. The aircraft should have a plurality of such systems, supplied in turn with pulses by a commutator 17. Instead of the bars being in separate grooves, each groove may contain a pair of bars 7, 8, Fig. 3 (not shown), or there may be two bars 7 connected in parallel, Fig. 4 (not shown), metallic spar (18) acting as the other part of the converter. In a sharp leading edge, Fig. 5 (not shown), conductor bars (21), (22) are located in a slot (20) and contoured to the shape of the wing, or the conductors may be constituted by two parts of the spar (18), Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), separated by a gap (23). The device may be used on other aircraft parts, such as blades of propellers, rotors or engines, air intakes, aerials, or on ships.
