1369054 Conveyers; packaging; magnetic handling devices FOOD PROCESS INSTALLATIONS (ANGLIA) Ltd 27 Nov 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 40948/71 Headings B8A B8C and B8H Apparatus for loading/unloading retort baskets in a cannery comprises a conveyer 4 which may feed an assembly conveyer 1 provided with a barrier 5 for cans. A wheeled carriage 11 is movable by a piston-cylinder unit 12 between the barrier and a loading/unloading station 9 and supports a permanent-magnet pick-up element 16 which may be raised and lowered relative to a retort basket 6 transported on a conveyer 20. The element 16 comprises a permanent magnet housed within a stainless steel casing 17 which carries piston-cylinder units 18 for operating a push plate 19. In loading the basket 6 cans grouped in the barrier 5 are picked up by the element 16 and after being lowered into the basket are disengaged from the magnet by operating the push plate 19. The carrier 11, with the element 16, is then returned to a position in register with a further batch of tins in the barrier 5 for repetition of the transfer operation. When the last layer of cans has been deposited the filled basket is moved away and replaced by an empty one. When unloading, the conveyer 4 is not operated and the barrier 5 is removed. Layers of cans from the basket travel the length of the conveyer 1 after which they are transferred to a labelling machine (not shown) by a magnetized belt conveyer 2 and a conveyer 3. The operations are controlled by micro-switches and a programme unit 14. The apparatus may be used to pack cartons with filled and labelled cans.
