Abstract

1368570 Making composite strips TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 28 Dec 1972 [26 June 1972] 59775/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division Gl] A multi-metallic element comprising two metallic layers 14, 12 of low and high coefficient of thermal expansion respectively is provided with an intermediate metallic layer 16 having a tensile strength greater than those of the other two layers and a coefficient of thermal expansion intermediate those of the other two layers, all the layers being bonded together. The layer 12 of high coefficient of thermal expansion may comprise an alloy of nickel, manganese and iron, an alloy of manganese, copper and nickel, or an alloy of iron, chromium and nickel with or without carbon. The layer 14 of low coefficient of thermal expansion may comprise an alloy of nickel and iron and the layer 16 may comprise stainless steel including carbon, manganese, silicon, chromium, nickel and iron. The stainless steel may be precipitation hardenable or of the austenitic type. Alternatively carbon steels or maraging steels may be utilized in the layer 16. Preferred alloys are detailed in the Specification. The layers 12, 14, 16 may be metallurgically bonded together by, for example, a rollbonding process.
