Abstract

1368226 Semi-conductor devices; capacitors; component assemblies PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Feb 1973 9279/73 Headings H1K H1M and H1R [Also in Division H2] A capacitor-diode voltage multiplier comprises a first ceramic plate 31 having electrodes deposited thereon to form one or more pulsefeeding capacitors and a second ceramic plate 32 co-planar with the first and having electrodes deposited thereon to form two or more storage capacitors, the capacitors being interconnected by (2n - 1) diodes D1 ... D5 where n is the voltage multiplication factor. The invention is applicable to deriving EHT voltage for the cathode-ray tube of a TV receiver from line flyback pulses. The ceramic plates 31, 32 may have dielectric constants in the range 500- 14,000; the electrodes 34 ... 39 being, e.g. solder deposited by photo-lithographic, vacuum deposition or silk-screen techniques. Alternatively electrodes of conducting epoxy resin may be employed. The ceramic plates 31, 32 may be formed as a single plate having gaps 61, 62 as shown and joined by members 41, 42 which may be removed after fabrication. The diodes D1 ... D5 may be moulded into a block 51 having solder posts 52 to line up with corresponding solder posts 53 on the two plates 31, 32. The block 51 is placed over the plates 31, 32 and the assembly heated to the melting point of the solder. The finished multiplier is encapsulated in epoxy resin in the same housing as the line transformer or in the socket for the cathode-ray tube. The multiplier may employ several voltage triplers (Fig. 2, not shown) connected in series. Modifications.-In Fig. 6 (not shown) a single ceramic plate may be formed having an H- shaped slotted portion so that the horizontal bar of the H separates the two plates, the narrow sections between the vertical bars of the H and the outside edge being later snapped off. A clipper diode may be connected across the input and a current limiting resistor connected in series with the output.
