Abstract

1368163 Walking beam conveyers LOFTUS ENG CORP 17 Oct 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 47844/72 Heading B8A [Also in Division F4] A top and bottom fired walking beam furnace has a series of parallel walking beam assemblies 10 each comprising two side beams 25 enclosing a traversing beam 44, a series of ramps, lifting racks and pinions between said side beams 25 for raising and lowering said beam 44 through a fluid motor 55 at the front of the furnace and an idler beam 40, another fluid motor 60 at the back of the furnace giving longitudinal movements to the beam 44, and burners 15 below with burners 18 above the walking beams and directed towards the front end of the furnace. The side beams 25 and traversing beam 44 carry heat resisting ceramic or metal rails 28, 46 on which rest the metal ingots or slabs S. The traversing beam 44 rests on idler beam 40 through rollers 42 formed with central pinions engaging racks 43 and 41. Similarly, idler beam 40 rests on a bottom beam 30 through rollers 36 with central pinions 37 engaging racks 39 and 35<SP>1</SP> the latter being formed on lifting ramps 34. The side beams 25 and bottom beams 30 are connected by struts 31, said side beams also having tie bolts 48 carrying spacing sleeves 49 and 50 and being held by nuts 48. All the beams are hollow as shown for water cooling and are supported in the furnace by water cooled pillars 12 and cross members 11. Operation.-Motors 55 are operated together to pull the idler beams 40 thus raising the traverse beams 44 through ramps 34 and rollers 36. Motors 60 then pull the traverse beams 44 to produce the forward motion, motors 55 and 60 then being reversed in turn to push their respective beams and to complete the quadrilateral motion, the slabs S being deposited on the rails 28 in their forward position,
