Abstract

1367902 Waterproofing and preventing swelling of cellulosic materials HERMANN TER HELL & CO mbH 6 July 1971 [10 July 1970 30 Nov 1970] 31570/71 Heading D1P [Also in Divisions B5 C3 and C5] A process for waterproofing and preventing swelling of papers and boards for the manufacture of corrugated boards comprises treating the papers and boards with a hydropholizing and swelling-preventive agent and subjecting the treated material to a thermal after treatment, said agent consisting of (1) 5 to 95 parts by weight of a coumarone/indene resin, polyterpene resin or petroleum resin of molecular weight 200 to 1800 and iodine number 0 to 250 and (2) 95 to 5 parts by weight of liquid and/or solid C 16-40 paraffins at least 30 weight per cent of which are n- or iso-paraffins. The agent may be employed as a melt, dissolved in solvents, e.g. hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons or dispersed in aqueous media with the aid of surface active agents. In examples papers are impregnated with (1) compositions comprising a resin of softening point 100‹C and paraffins of melting point 36‹C, and (2) aqueous dispersions comprising a resin of softening point 100‹C and paraffns of softening point 53‹C or paraffin oils of boiling range 280 to 310‹C.
