Abstract

1367881 Subaqueous structures NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 16 Sept 1971 [18 Sept 1970 (2)] 44589/70 and 44590/70 Heading E1H A "foundation" structure, Fig. 7, comprises a butyl rubber or mastic sealing-sheet 81 in or on the bed surface 80 of a body of water above rigid drain pipes 82 in sand and/or gravel. Said pipes and/or further rigid elements (not shown) may be connected to the sheet 81 at joints 87. Suction applied (at least initially) to the drain pipes draws water from beneath the sheet to press the latter against the bottom. Netting 85, concrete blocks 83, rocks (not shown), sand or gravel 88, or layers of bitumous or asphaltic material may protect the upper surface of the sheet 81. Means to inject grouting material beneath the. sheet may be provided, to fill cracks due to the drainage. Fig. 2 shows the structure used to anchor a storage tank 40; in which case, a collar 49 of an annular sealing sheet 48, is held against a wall 42 by a sealing member 50. The tank is fixed to grouting, sand or mud filled bags 51 bonded to the sheet. Water in cavity 41 and below sheet 48 is (at least initially) pumped out via well 43. Fig. 5 shows the structure applied to a flexible barrier formed by an extension 62 of a sealing sheet 60. Lines 66 and props 68 connect the upper edge to the sheet end/or rigid elements fixed beneath it. Alternatively (Fig. 6, not shown) the upper edge may be looped back onto the sealing sheet to form an inflatable barrier. Fig. 1 shows the structure used to anchor buoyant underwater storage tanks, oil pipelines, oil process plant, offshore drilling rigs or floating vessels. In this case rigid anchoring elements 17 to which a buoyed anchoring chain 23 is attached, are provided below the sealing sheet 19, and the drainpipes 13 extend into the seabed 11 possibly through a paper filter layer 14. Water is drained from below the sheet 19 (at least initially) via a line 26 and surface outlet (not shown) by a pump 27. Subsequent water seepage below sheet 19 can be periodically blown out from drainage vessel 28 into the body of water past apertures (not shown) in valve 31, with air supplied from a compresor carried on the buoy.
