Abstract

1367625 Air rectification process BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 26 Nov 1971 [27 Nov 1970] 56485/70 Heading F4P Recovery of krypton and xenon from saturated oxygen vapour and of liquid oxygen containing hydrocarbon withdrawn at 40, 25 respectively from the reboiler of an air separation column (not shown) is effected by absorbing the h.c. and CO 2 by passage of the liquid oxygen through an absorber 22, in part vaporizing at 10 to yield a liquid containing residual h.c. and CO 2 and an oxygen vapour which is mixed with the withdrawn saturated oxygen in line 25 and fed into a rectification column 23 at a point near the base of an upper section 24 of the column, withdrawing at 51 from below a reboiler 28 a heavy h.c. and CO 2 -free liquid containing at least 10% of krypton and withdrawing from the head of the column at 37 gaseous krypton-free oxygen; the methane content of the withdrawn liquid in line 51 being kept at a minimum by using in the upper section 24 of column 23 a reflux ratio within the range 0À07 to 0À2 and a ratio of the number of theoretical trays of the upper section 24 to that in the lower section 26 being between 6 and 12. The kryptonrich liquid withdrawn at 51 is added to the liquid withdrawn from vaporizer 10, vaporized at 52, the residual hydrocarbons and oxygen are in part removed by being subjected at 54 to a hydrogen flame, water is separated at 29 and product gaseous krypton and xenon is stored at 32. An absorption catalyst can be used instead of the hydrogen flame.
