1367148 Welding by pressure; punching INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI EO PATONA AKADEMII NAUK UKRAINSKOI SSR 28 Dec 1971 60228/71 Headings B3R and B3W A machine for resistance butt welding tubular pieces to a sheet and for punching holes in the sheet comprises a welding head 3 mounted on a frame 1 and having transformers 4, lower electrodes 10 for contacting the sheet, upper electrodes 8 for encircling tubular pieces and a vertically movable beam 7 carrying the upper electrodes and means 9 for clamping a sheet upon the lower electrodes, a punch 12 being located for reciprocation in a vertical through aperture within each lower electrode for punching a hole in a sheet coaxial with a tubular piece. The welding head 3 comprises a fixed lower beam 6 carrying the electrodes 10 above the beam and piston and cylinder devices 14 below the beam, the piston of each device 14 carrying a punch 12 within a passage in an electrode 10. The upper beam 7 is carried on the rod of a piston and cylinder device 5 and the electrodes 8 grip tubular pieces 22. Transformers 4 supply current to the electrodes and the head is mounted on rollers for movement with continuously fed sheet along the frame 1, a ram being provided for return of the head. In operation the fed sheet 21 is clamped against the electrodes by lowering the beam 7 and tubular pieces 22 clamped by the electrodes 8 are welded to the sheet as current flows from the transformers 4. After welding is completed a timer sends a signal to actuate devices 14 to force the punches through the sheet and into the pieces 22. The punches are withdrawn and the upper beam is retracted and the head 2 which advanced with the sheet during the operations is now returned by the return ram. The tubular pieces may be pipes or sleeves forming parts of heat exchangers, gasoline tanks &c.
